Recycling is the process by which waste is transformed in a new product.
Waste recycling developed on a constant basis and is carried out to a large extent, both for household and industrial waste. Almost all materials can be recycled. The most known materials are plastic, glass, paper and metals. A challenge in the field of recycling is the recovery of plastic materials.
Among the most frequently used plastic materials there are PET (polyethylene terephthalate), HDPE (high density polyethylene), LDPE (low density polyethylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PP (polypropylene), PS (polystyrene), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene).
These materials are used in the production of bottles for alcoholic drinks and soft drinks, jars and bottles for food products, for detergents and cosmetic products, bags, sacks, shopping bags, food and non-food transparent packaging, medicine containers, products in the construction industry such as pipes, fittings, fenders, slabs, imitation leather products and many other applications.
The recycling process involves a chain of activities: collection, sorting, grinding, washing, regranulation, blowing, injection and a complex line of machinery and equipment: sorting belts, mills, cleaning and washing equipment, regranulation machine
Collection is made:
- in purpose-designed centres specialized in waste collection;
- by natural persons collecting household and industrial waste from small producers;
- from producers, who, by he activity they carry out, obtain refuses which may be recycled.
Waste sorting is an essential stage in the recycling process and it ensures the purity of the finished product.al.
Sorting may be manual, automatic or mixed.
In general, materials are sorted manually by the specially trained personnel, according to their type. Some plastics may seem identical but in fact belong to different material groups, with a different molecular structure. Recycling is not possible if the plastics are mixed. Therefore, a careful analysis of the chemical composition of the recyclable material should be made.
Automatic sorting uses NIR and/or X-rays as detectors. The use of NIR rays has the advantage that it recognizes different types of plastic (PS, PVC, PP), whilst X-ray detectors can scan and remove only PVC. NIR-rays detectors guarantee a separation of the materials of 96% as compared to the initial level of contamination, and X-rays detectors ensure a separation of 99% of PVC from the other materials.
Washing is the process of removal of dirt and other contaminations of the plastic material. If the plastic is contaminated with oil, glue or other sticky materials, the washing process requires the use of special detergents but if it is contaminated with paper or sand settled onto the surface, the detergents are not useful.
The machine is equipped with a washing cylinder in which the plastic flakes are introduced, which generate, when turned at high speed, a movement of the centrifugal pump, of the granulation machine rotor and of the centrifugal drying, eliminating the impurities from the surface of the plastic flakes.
In order to be transformed in pellets, the material firstly passes through the mill where it is grinded. If the material has larger dimensions, the shredder and then the mill are used in order to grind it.
Extrusion is a procedure which transforms a material in a homogeneous and soft content by mixing and heating (mechanical and thermal).
The material compressed in a cylinder is pushed towards a filter in order to acquire a shape. By this procedure semi-finished products with different shapes can be obtained.
Blowing- after extrusion the material passes in a forming die where air is blown, thus obtaining convex objects.
Injection- in a fist stage the material is compressed in a cylinder by a helical conveyor, being homogenized by mixing and heating. In a second stage the material is expelled in a cool die.
By this procedure finished and semi-finished products with complex shapes are obtained, which most of the times can not be made by extrusion (e.g. bottle preforms).
